9 to 5 the Musical

9 to 5 The Musical, with music and lyrics by Dolly Parton and book by Patricia Resnick, is based on the seminal 1980 hit movie. Set in the late 1970s, this hilarious story of friendship and revenge in the Rolodex era is outrageous, thought-provoking and even a little romantic.

Pushed to the boiling point, three female coworkers concoct a plan to get even with the sexist, egotistical, lying, hypocritical bigot they call their boss. In a hilarious turn of events, Violet, Judy and Doralee live out their wildest fantasy – giving their boss the boot! While Hart remains “otherwise engaged,” the women give their workplace a dream makeover, taking control of the company that had always kept them down. Hey, a girl can scheme, can’t she?

Audition Requirements: Please prepare a 1-2 minute comedic monologue and a 2-3 minute song that shows your vocal range and abilities best.  You may bring sheet music or recorded accompaniment; we will have an accompanist and a Bluetooth speaker available for use.  You may also be asked to do a reading from the script or sing from the libretto.  Please be certain that you are available for ALL performance dates (see above) as well as tech week (Feb 10-15).  Expect rehearsals to begin in mid-December with a break at Christmas.  Major roles should expect 3 rehearsals a week initially.  Ensemble and minor roles will not need to be at all rehearsals until the show dates approach.  Rehearsal location will likely be in Seymour at a rental space TBA.  Tech week rehearsals will be at the Pines.  Note: The Broadway musical is available to watch on YouTube if you want to familiarize yourself with roles and songs in advance.

Cast Requirements:

*Violet: The company’s head secretary and Mr. Hart’s administrative assistant, she is a single mother and stands up for what she believes in; attractive, strong, ambitious

*Doralee: A sexy spitfire who works at Mr. Hart’s office. She is proof that there is more to a woman than just her looks.

*Judy: The “new” girl at the firm, she has been burned by her husband’s affair and is searching for personal empowerment. Insecure, determined, and hopeful

*Roz Keith: The attentive office gossip queen and snitch. She has an unrequited love for Mr. Hart and will do anything she can to win his approval.

Maria: A young and vibrant secretary in Hart’s office

Kathy: A secretary in Hart’s office with a tendency to gossip

Missy: Franklin Hart’s wife, clueless to her husband’s true nature

Margaret: A secretary in Hart’s office with a tendency to drink

*Franklin Hart: One of the firm’s executives and a notorious chauvinist. He is capable of faking charm but usually shows his true colors as an arrogant, self-absorbed boss.

*Joe: A handsome, young office accountant. Genuine and nice, and smitten with Violet

*Dwayne: Doralee’s attractive husband. He is very supportive of her professional pursuits.

Josh: Violet’s awkward teenage son

Dick: Judy’s soon-to-be ex-husband. An average guy, he is sporting a little less hair and a little more paunch than he did ten years ago

Tinsworthy: Hart’s boss and chairman of the board. A good man, who may be wiser to Hart’s ways than he lets on

Ensemble: This musical contains multiple opportunities for chorus singing and dancing.  Depending upon audition turnout, up to 10 ensemble members may be cast.  This is a great chance for those who want to take part in the fun, but may not want to be in the sole spotlight!

*Indicates strong vocal requirements—multiple solos

As always, we welcome involvement behind the scenes as well!  If you’d like to be involved in lighting, sound, stage crew, or set construction, please contact us!  We also ask you to pass the audition notice on to anyone you think may be interested, post at work, church, school!
